THE CALLING

THEY LEFT ORDINARY LIFE, FAMILY, WORK AND ENTERED TO A MONASTERY.

They left ordinary life, wife, kids, work and entered to a monastery.

In its portraits of three monks, Erik Praus’s documentary captures the inimitable spiritual ambiance and mysticism of Pochayiv Lavra, an Eastern Orthodox monastery on a hill above the town of Pochayiv in western Ukraine’s Ternopil Oblast. Fathers Gabriel, Vicilentius and Nazarij have left their past traumas behind, finding peace, balance and their lives’ meaning at the monastery.

Their stories are allegories of spiritualization and purification from human passions against the backdrop of the turbulent Ukrainian reality.

Motivated by material need and spiritual desperation, the faithful flock to this place of pilgrimage in search of new strength and forgiveness. The film respectfully observes the monks’ everyday lives, while also noticing the opulent splendour of their surroundings.

The road to faith is not a privilege of the chosen few; it is open to all who hear its “calling”.

TRAILER

POCHAYIV LAVRA

According to a legend from the 13th century, on the top of the Pocajev Rock in the west of Ukraine, the Holy Mother of God appeared to the pastoral monks and shepherds. At the place of her appearance, she left a footprint from which sprung a healing spring.

Orthodox believers also perceive the sanctity of the place through the story of St. Jov (1551-1651), who became the superior of the monastery. During his time, the monastery was in bloom. Jov lived his ascetic life for 100 years. Many went to his grave to pray, begging for help, and known are tales about successful recoveries from various diseases.

The monastery also holds the icon of the Holy Virgin, which has miraculous powers, according to believers.

CAST

Father Gabriel

Father Gabriel

Father Gabriel grew up in an atheistic family, did not go to church, he was foreign to his religious doctrine. For the first time in his life, the monastery visited his friend in the 29’s and felt that he had found a home. He was already there.

Father Vicilentius

Father Vicilentius

Father Vicilentius lived in his youth action life, which involved extreme sports, drugs, dance techno parties. At a certain stage, his carefree life began to collapse and he found himself in problems that were increasingly deepening. The cycling cut through them until he came to the monastery, where he found peace.

Father Nazarij

Father Nazarij

Father Nazarij started the construction business after the fall of communism. In his business he did not obscure the practices typical of the 1990s, which were often on the edge of the law. Unexpectedly, however, came the evil. He gave up his possessed possessions, decided to live in a solitary family, and entered a monastery.
